IPA 2009 Fundraising Appeal - URGENT! Dear Friends of IPA: IPA probably faces its biggest challenge ever – trying to raise $100,000 for 2009 - a year in which the economy has soured and nonprofits everywhere are going to face unprecedented crises. If you need to read no further, simply go to http://www.paruresis.org/join.htm to pay online (preferred), or send in the enclosed donation form to the office. Almost all of us have been affected by the economic downturn. For those of you hit hard, it’s a difficult time (for me too). All I can say is: “This too shall pass.” What goes down must go up. (The only question is when.) However, that doesn’t particularly help in the moment. We are all cutting back, deciding where to spend/donate our hard earned dollars. Depending on the amount we raise, IPA will have the following five budget options next year: 1) drastic; 2) minimalist; 3) basic; 4) adequate and 5) satisfactory. (Option 6 – flush – doesn’t seem realistic for next year?). In summary, here’s what this means. Anything less than $25,000 and we will most likely have to lay off staff, close the office, and be unable to update the website or respond to emails or phone calls. If we raise $25,000 for 2009, all we’ll have is our office, phone, insurance and a few other things. Someone will work a few hours a week to take care of essential business. And, that’s it. With $50,000, we can add a part-time staff person (Yvonne) for 20 hours a week, and have our CFO (Karen) come in 4 hours a week to do the books. Period. If we raise $75,000, I (the CEO) can continue to work my 5-10 hours a week for IPA. This will allow for some basic programming (especially concerning drug testing in the workplace and setting the scientific groundwork for uncovering the mechanism of paruresis). Finally, if we raise $100,000, we can add a part-time (20 hours per week) development director, which is so crucial to IPA's future existence. As I'm fond of saying, nothing has changed in our society (much less worldwide) to prevent another generation of people with paruresis from being created. That's my pitch. Pretty basic. Pretty necessary. We'll see what we are able to do in 2009. We will survive, the only question is in what form. Best, Steven Soifer, Ph.D., LGSW
